If your outlet looks like this, it is time to replace it. Yes, it is mildly tragic that you will be getting rid of a piece of plastic and metal that may or may not ever be recycled. On the other hand, it’s far better than burning down the entire neighborhood, which would not be very environmentally friendly, or neighborly.

Although if you do wish to reclaim some of the materials in the outlet, the steel and brass components can be separated out and sold to a scrap metal yard. When I get to that stage with this poor outlet I will document how to do this.

And thank you, previous homeowners, for providing me with the inspiration and material for this post by leaving me this little gem to discover.
